A First-Timer's Guide to Thamel, Kathmandu

Thamel is Kathmandu's main tourist hub, and for most visitors - including guests staying at Tritara Apartment - it's the neighborhood they'll spend the most time in. It can also be overwhelming on arrival: narrow lanes, constant motorbike traffic, and shopfronts stacked three deep with trekking gear, pashmina, and souvenirs.

What it's actually like

Don't expect wide streets or much order to the layout - Thamel is a maze of alleys that reward wandering more than planning. Shops selling near-identical trekking gear and souvenirs sit next to genuinely good restaurants and quiet guesthouses, often on the same block.

What to do there

• Browse gear shops if you're heading out on a trek afterward - prices are negotiable almost everywhere
• Eat well: Thamel has a dense concentration of restaurants covering Nepali, Tibetan, Indian, and international food
• Use it as your base for day trips to the temples and squares around the valley

Practical tips

Traffic doesn't reliably stop for pedestrians, so cross carefully. Bargaining is normal in most shops, though not in restaurants or supermarkets. And keep your accommodation's address handy - the alleys look similar enough that it's easy to lose your bearings on the first day or two.
