Hotel Room vs. Apartment: What Long-Stay Guests Should Know

For a one or two night stopover, almost any clean, well-located room will do. But once a trip stretches past a week, the type of room you book starts to matter as much as the property itself.

Daily costs add up differently

A hotel room usually means eating out for every meal, which is fine for a short trip but becomes a real expense over one or two weeks. A room with even a basic kitchen setup lets you handle breakfast - and the occasional full meal - yourself.

Having somewhere to actually live, not just sleep

Long-stay travel involves more downtime than a short holiday - laundry, work calls, planning the next leg of a trip. A separate living space, rather than just a bed and a bathroom, makes those in-between hours far more comfortable.

Location still comes first

None of this matters much if the property is far from where you actually want to spend your time. For Kathmandu, that generally means Thamel or somewhere within easy walking distance of it - close to restaurants, shops, and the main sights, so you're not dependent on taxis for everyday errands.

If you're planning a longer stay in Kathmandu, it's worth weighing a self-contained apartment against a standard hotel room before you book - the difference is easy to underestimate until you're actually a week into the trip.
