Nagarkot: A Sunrise Day Trip from Kathmandu

Nagarkot is a hill station roughly an hour's drive east of Kathmandu, known for wide views over the valley and, on a clear day, a distant line of Himalayan peaks - including Everest, weather permitting. It's one of the easiest ways to get a proper mountain view without committing to a multi-day trek.

Why sunrise specifically

Nagarkot's viewpoints are at their best at sunrise, when the air is clearest and the mountains catch the early light. Visibility drops later in the day as haze builds up over the valley, so an early start genuinely makes a difference here.

Planning the trip

Most visitors either head up the evening before and stay overnight near the viewpoint, or leave Kathmandu very early to arrive before sunrise. Either way, it works well as a one or two night side trip rather than a rushed same-day round trip.

Best time of year

Visibility is weather-dependent, so it's worth checking conditions before committing - the clearest mountain views are generally in the cooler, drier months, while the monsoon season brings the most cloud cover.
