Swayambhunath: A Walk Up to the Monkey Temple

Swayambhunath, commonly called the Monkey Temple for the troops of rhesus macaques that live on the hill, is one of the oldest and most recognizable religious sites in the Kathmandu Valley. It sits about 3 km from Thamel, on a hilltop overlooking the city.

The climb

Reaching the main stupa means climbing a long stone staircase (or taking a road route around the back for a gentler approach). It's worth the effort - the summit gives one of the better panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley you'll find without leaving the city.

What to expect at the top

The white stupa, painted with the watchful eyes of Buddha facing each direction, is surrounded by smaller shrines, prayer wheels, and a scattering of souvenir stalls. Give yourself at least an hour to walk the site properly.

About the monkeys

They're used to visitors, and generally harmless, but keep food out of sight and don't try to feed or touch them - a friendly-looking macaque can still take a swipe if it feels crowded.
